5 Months of cell phone service for only $6.30 per month

I don’t use a cell phone much, and have found that TracFone works out the best for as much as I need. With their service you buy a card for a certain number of minutes and a time frame (in months). For example, they have cards from 60 minutes/3 months to 400 minutes/1 year. They also have bonus coupons that are pretty easy to find, so that you get extra minutes when buying them.

My current plan was about to run out, so I headed over to their website to extend my plan. I had a coupon for 20 extra minutes when buying a 60 minute (or more) card. I added a 60 minute/3 month card to my cart for just $19.95. During checkout, there was an offer to buy and additional 2 months for $10 more. Since I don’t use it that much, I went ahead and added that as well.

After adding the coupon for the extra 20 minutes though, I couldn’t see that it applied it. Not wanting to lose my extra 20 minutes, I went back several times and made sure I was using the right coupon code. The website still didn’t show the bonus minutes, but I figured that I’d call them up and ask them to do it manually if it didn’t work. So I went ahead and paid, and on the screen after you pay, it credits the minutes to your phone. Turns out that it added the 60 minutes I purchased as well as 80 bonus minutes. So either it applied the coupon multiple times (4x 20 minutes), or the coupon was in their database wrong as 80 bonus minutes (60 + 20) instead of 20 bonus minutes.

In any case, I’m pretty happy. That ended up being 140 minutes and 5 months of service for only $31.50 total. I bet the taxes on most cell phone plans are probably more than $6.30 per month. Next time I get an annoying mall guy asking me to change phone plans I’ll have to ask him if he can beat that.
